It's time for us to look out for each other and appreciate those on the front lines of this pandemic
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, FAO urges the public to buy food from local small businesses, respect farmers, fishermen and livestock breeders who produce food, shop wisely and eat healthy food. “It is time for us to look out for each other and appreciate those on the front lines of this pandemic.
"They are the ones who produce food for us to eat every day in these difficult times," said Stephen Rudgard, FAO Representative in Indonesia.
FAO's eight appeals are:
- Remember those food heroes during this pandemic, such as small farmers, fishermen, livestock breeders, truck drivers, and sellers in markets/supermarkets who prepare food for the community.
- Buy food from small businesses to support their livelihoods in these difficult times.
- When you buy food from the market/supermarket, wear a mask, try to ensure a safe physical distance, and keep your hands clean.
- Shop wisely - buying too much fresh food (such as fruit, vegetables, fish, beef and chicken) at one time can result in food spoiling and being wasted, this will increase food waste and cost you money.
- There is no need to stockpile food at home because COVID-19 does not directly affect food production.
- Consume food that is nutritious, varied, balanced and safe for you and your family.
- Wash your hands before and after handling food at home, and follow good food processing practices.
- Share your food, or support food banks, community groups or charities that provide free food to vulnerable people, however you can. Your generosity is critical during this crisis.
FAO continues to work closely with the Government to provide advice and support on measures to reduce the impact of COVID-19 on a sustainable and resilient Indonesian food system, including conducting assessments and analysis for policy changes.
