Indonesia lands two UN Public Service Awards for accelerating sustainable development

Incheon, Republic of Korea/Jakarta, Indonesia, 26 June 2024 – Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) and the City of Semarang are two of just 15 recipients globally of the United Nations Public Service Awards 2024. This makes Indonesia one of only two countries in the world to be receiving more than one award this year.

The UN Public Service Awards recognize new solutions to provide services to people, while advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Winning initiatives leveraged information and communication technologies as well as digital government to respond to multiple global challenges. They further enhance the capabilities of public administrations.  

The Public Service Awards Ceremony was hosted by Li Junhua, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, commemorating the UN Public Service Day on 24 June.

Selected from among 400 applications from 73 countries, Indonesia and Portugal received two awards each, while Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Germany, Jordan, the Republic of Korea, Latvia, South Africa, Tanzania and Thailand took one each.

SIDIK: Developed to Assess Climate Change Vulnerability

MoEF won the award in the climate action category in recognition of its innovative "Vulnerability Index Data Information System" (SIDIK), a tool designed to assess climate vulnerability and risks at the village level across Indonesia.

The SIDIK system was developed by the MoEF to assist line ministries and local governments in conducting climate change vulnerability and risk assessments. It provides detailed data and information on threats such as floods and droughts, as well as forest and land fires. The tool allows for generic and sector-specific vulnerability analyses, including in the areas of health, food and water resources. It allows flexibility in the scope of analysis from national down to the provincial, regency, district and village levels.

The tool enables local governments to add their own data; it supports the development of informed local climate strategies and action plans. SIDIK is expected to play an important role in shaping national climate policies, including the Nationally Determined Contribution for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition to MoEF’s award, the Semarang City Government has received an Honourable Mention in the gender equality category for its “SANPIISAN” initiative. This proactive maternal and child health service emphasizes prevention and comprehensive monitoring.
