Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelagic nation, is strongly committed to the sustainable development of its maritime and marine resources for equitable, inclusive and sustainable growth and human well-being. To advance the achievement of its National Blue Agenda, the government, under the leadership of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Marvest), is working closely with the United Nations in Indonesia and eight specialized UN agencies (FAO, ILO, UNDP, UNEP, UNESCO, UNIDO, UNOPS, UNWOMEN) in a broad range of areas ranging from the issuance of financing bonds to the development of eco-friendly fisheries and gender-sensitive training programmes for workers in the maritime sector, among others.
Speakers at the launch include UN Resident Coordinator Valerie Julliand, the Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investment of Indonesia Luhut B. Panjaitan, the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean Peter Thomson, along with many other senior representatives from the Indonesian Government and international development partners.
“Indonesians will benefit from the complementary expertise and skills of the many actors in this partnership, as well as from the additional resources provided,” said Ms. Julliand. “Following the launch, we will get to work right away on implementing the commitments made by all sides.”
The partnership will help the government in reaching the UN Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal 14 on the ocean and Goal 17 on partnerships.
