Migration Governance for Sustainable Development in Indonesia Fact Sheet

Indonesia has demonstrated its commitment to making migration work for all by adopting the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) in December 2018. As a country of origin, transit, and destination for migrants, Indonesia is focused on improving global migration governance and ensuring that migrants' human rights are at the center of its policies. This joint program supports the Indonesian government in strengthening its capacity for evidence-based, gender-responsive migration management at national and sub-national levels.

Through the program, the UN has facilitated the establishment of an inter-ministerial coordination mechanism for a National Action Plan, which aims to implement Indonesia's commitments under the GCM. The program has achieved several key results, such as capacity building on migration governance at the national level, localizing the Global Compact for Migration, and promoting a human rights-based and gender-responsive implementation of the GCM.

The joint program has worked closely with various implementing partners, including civil society organizations, universities, ministries, and governmental agencies, to create positive narratives and perceptions of migrants and refugees. The program emphasizes their contributions to national development while promoting the human rights of all migrants across all stages of the migration cycle.
